I didn’t think I would be taking any more internships while working on my PhD, but Orbital offered me a great opportunity to do some work with spacecraft and take a small break from all of my aircraft work. I am working in the systems engineering group for the Cygnus spacecraft, which is the space vehicle being designed by Orbital to perform resupply missions to the International Space Station once the Space Shuttle retires. The Cygnus development is part of NASA’s Commercial Orbit Transportation Services (COTS) and Commercial Resupply Service (CRS) programs. It also allows the US to use their own vehicles for resupply missions without having to pay other countries.

It will be nice to take a small break from my PhD work and get some more industry experience, especially in regards to systems engineering. I am still undecided on my plans post PhD (whenever that might be), and hope that a summer at Orbital will put some fresh “industry perspective” in my life. And even though I’m calling this a “break” from my PhD work, I am still continuing to do PhD work and will have one or two trips to NASA Langley for my GSRP Fellowship, and continue work on preparing for my preliminary exam, which I hope to take this upcoming fall.

Last year I won the award for Best Abstract, and this year I am hoping to place in the top three for presentations, but the awards are not given out until late April after all of the presentations.

I just submitted an abstract for a conference paper for the 11th AIAA Aviation Technology, Integration, and Operations (ATIO) Conference. It’s titled Decomposition Approach for Large Aircraft Allocation Problems that Incorporate Environmental Considerations. I hope to present some of the good preliminary data of my PhD dissertation in this conference paper. I am also co-authoring another paper for the ATIO Conference entitled Impact of Development Rates of Future Aircraft Technologies on Fleet-Wide Environmental Emissions.

This is one of the “big” conferences for my research in aircraft design and aircraft operations, and I have gone to the past two ATIO conferences. This year it is being held September 20-22 in Virginia Beach, VA. I’ve been to Virginia Beach when I have gone to do summer visits at NASA’s Langley Research Center, but it’s a lovely area and I can’t complain with a trip to the beachfront in mid-September.

I have had this domain for over ten years, but I haven’t had a website for over five of those ten years. As I am starting to get serious about my future and my hopeful plans of getting into academia after my PhD, I decided it was important to create a new website to highlight my achievements in graduate school at Purdue University. I hope to keep this site updated and post news about me and updates on my research and PhD work while I’m at Purdue and well into the future. I hope to add more content to this site as I have time, but I am very happy with its content right now.

To follow more of my personal side, use the various sites that are linked in the icons on the top of the page. These sites include Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Flickr and Picasa. I also hope to create an active Tumblr in the future to micro blog some of my thoughts that are too big for Twitter.
