Summer Internship at Orbital
I didn’t think I would be taking any more internships while working on my PhD, but Orbital offered me a great opportunity to do some work with spacecraft and take a small break from all of my aircraft work. I am working in the systems engineering group for the Cygnus spacecraft, which is the space vehicle being designed by Orbital to perform resupply missions to the International Space Station once the Space Shuttle retires. The Cygnus development is part of NASA’s Commercial Orbit Transportation Services (COTS) and Commercial Resupply Service (CRS) programs. It also allows the US to use their own vehicles for resupply missions without having to pay other countries.
It will be nice to take a small break from my PhD work and get some more industry experience, especially in regards to systems engineering. I am still undecided on my plans post PhD (whenever that might be), and hope that a summer at Orbital will put some fresh “industry perspective” in my life. And even though I’m calling this a “break” from my PhD work, I am still continuing to do PhD work and will have one or two trips to NASA Langley for my GSRP Fellowship, and continue work on preparing for my preliminary exam, which I hope to take this upcoming fall.
2011 Research Symposium Series
On Thursday, February 24, I gave a presentation similar to my AIAA ASM N+3 SST presentation for the Purdue University School of Aeronautics and Astronautics Research Symposium Series. The presentation and abstract are available under my Publications Section. The talk was well attended, mostly due to the free pizza…
Last year I won the award for Best Abstract, and this year I am hoping to place in the top three for presentations, but the awards are not given out until late April after all of the presentations.
New and Updated Curriculum Vitae
I’ve slowly been changing my ways and using LaTeX for everything and abandoning Microsoft Word. My latest adventure was to update my CV using LaTeX and the package ModernCV. I’m not sure if I am 100% in love with the new look, but I like it enough to replace my old CV with it. I am always looking for ways to improve and evolve my CV, so please send along any suggestions, comments or any good LaTeX CV references!
You can download my new CV under “Contact Me” on the right hand side, or download it here.
Abstract Submitted for AIAA ATIO
I just submitted an abstract for a conference paper for the 11th AIAA Aviation Technology, Integration, and Operations (ATIO) Conference. It’s titled Decomposition Approach for Large Aircraft Allocation Problems that Incorporate Environmental Considerations. I hope to present some of the good preliminary data of my PhD dissertation in this conference paper. I am also co-authoring another paper for the ATIO Conference entitled Impact of Development Rates of Future Aircraft Technologies on Fleet-Wide Environmental Emissions.
This is one of the “big” conferences for my research in aircraft design and aircraft operations, and I have gone to the past two ATIO conferences. This year it is being held September 20-22 in Virginia Beach, VA. I’ve been to Virginia Beach when I have gone to do summer visits at NASA’s Langley Research Center, but it’s a lovely area and I can’t complain with a trip to the beachfront in mid-September.
Got an iPhone and Starting to FourSquare
When the iPhone came to Verizon, I snatched it up on the first day I could. I have always been a huge Apple fan, and the iPhone is no exception. One of my favorite parts of the iPhone is the location based services, such as Google Latitude and FourSquare. I am having fun using these services, so I added a link to my FourSquare Profile in the navigation buttons on top of the menu. Feel free to add me and follow me wherever I go with my fancy new iPhone.
